Shifting Whispering Sands

A Wink Martindale EP (bought recently from The Old Grammar School record shop in Rye Sussex) which includes four tracks including his ‘greatest hit’; Deck of Cards but starting with The Shifting Whispering Sands which is much gloomier than I remembered, with words describing a dead miner buried beneath drifting sands, unknown and undiscovered. Beyond the Sunset is equally morose with reference to the afterlife like something that might play in a funeral parlour, all played at slightly slower than 45rpm creating a mood between hysterical laughter and abject misery. Slightly brighter is a track by artist Jean Dubuffet from Expériences Musicales de Jean Dubuffet 1961 originally issued as a set of vinyl LPs in editions of only 60 copies, each one with a printed cover by Dubuffet, now impossibly rare, but one has just been reissued on vinyl. The track I chose is a 10 minute piece entitled Bateau Coulé. Two tracks by Ian William Craig from Centres. Side two of a 10″ vinyl by Ed Sanders; Yiddish Speaking Socialists of the Lower East Side. République by Winter Family.
