Five Flies

Flying Dutchmen and Dutch numerology. Recordings by the eccentric Amsterdam restaurateur; Nicolaas Kroese who died in 1971. He started the famous restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen in 1939. I worked there as a waiter for a few months in 1970, my friend John Cramphorn was a plongeur. Kroese made two 45s, one is a record on which he talks about his esoteric ideas. On the other he speaks the intro and the rest is a song sung by Conny Renoir. The programme starts with Numerology by M.V. Mathews from “Music From Mathematics” played by IBM 7090 computer and digital to sound transducer (1962). Then, not necessarily in this order: several tracks from “Harde Smart”, Flemish and Dutch Grooves from the 70’s; “Incantations” by Louis de Meester which employs a Letterist text by Isidore Isou; “Exodus” by Paul de Vree – Cor Doesburg, from an exceedingly rare LP of Dutch sound poetry called AHAHAH8 Review for Verbal Plasticism; “Buona Sera” on a Dutch barrel organ.
